Here at Big Motoring World we love the New Year. It is the perfect time to look ahead at what’s coming up over the next 12 months – and in an industry as dynamic as ours there’s always something new to look forward to. So what do we think 2018 has in store for us? Here’s our take on a couple of the biggest trends for the year to come.
Things are going to keep on getting more rugged
The new car industry has fallen head over heels in love with the crossover/SUV range, and it seems that every car that is offered nowadays also has a more rugged version to choose from. We’re talking bumped up suspensions and side body cladding here – the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain that we recently reviewed on this site is a great example of how manufacturers have taken a standard model and given it the ‘Hulk makeover’. It’s a bold and chunky aesthetic, and while the look might be an acquired taste for some, it looks like it’s set to only get bigger in 2018. While we’re on the subject of design, it looks like lighting tech is also becoming increasingly important to manufacturers – so look out for more quirky LED lights and headlights that give your car a unique personality.
Blue is the colour
So, this is really a reaction to another trend that is now on the wane – the fashion for white cars. Manufacturers weren’t too keen on white as it is a hard colour to charge for, and so as a result they’re now really keen for us to buy blue – research by LeaseCar.uk suggests that there are already more on the road now, so expect this to increase over 2018.
It’s probably fair to say that the most popular colours of the past few years – silver, black and, yes, white, will continue to be a pretty common sight on our roads, but we’re predicting a blue wave in 2018.
Overall, we can also expect more advances in parking and safety tech, as well as a rise in car sharing and e-hailing – using your smartphone to hire a vehicle when and where you need it.
