2016 Was a Great Year for Used Cars in the UK!

There’s nothing more satisfying than getting a luxury car, such as a BMW or a Mercedes, at a rock-bottom price, because you bought it second-hand. It seems as though this is a popular opinion among many Britons, as new figures show that 2016 was a great year for used car sales in the UK!

Increasing sales

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a body that represents the British car industry, is constantly releasing fresh used car figures. Here at Big Motoring World, we regularly check in with SMMT, to gauge just how interested you are in buying quality vehicles second-hand! We started realising that 2016 could be a banner year for used cars, when SMMT released its figures for the opening six months of the year. From January to June 2016, an impressive 4.18 million second-hand vehicles were bought in this country, rising by 8% on the same period of 2015. Sales kept climbing in the second half of the year and in October, cap hpi, an automotive industry resource, projected that used car deals would reach new heights in 2016, at an estimated 7.6 million units.

Record year

But the UK’s used car market actually surpassed these lofty expectations this year. According to the Daily Mail, new data from SMMT shows that a staggering 8.2 million second-hand cars were bought by Britons over the previous calendar year. It goes without saying that this is a new record, with the number of second-hand vehicles sold in the UK increasing by 7.3%, when compared to 2015. This means that an astonishing 8,2000,084 second-hand vehicles changed hands last year, while 2.7m cars were registered in the same time-frame. In terms of fuel types, petrol continued to dominate the UK’s used car market in 2016, with 4.6 million units sold. However, petrol’s market share decreased by 1.5%, while sales of used diesels and alternative fuelled vehicles climbed by 11.1% and 32.5%.

Major progress

If we turn our attention to brands, we see that budget car-makers dominated second-hand vehicle sales in 2016. The top five sold used cars of last year were all either Fords, Vauxhalls or Volkswagens. However, there was one luxury brand that made it into the top ten – BMW. Coming in at 211,656 units sold, the BMW Series 3 was the UK’s sixth most popular used car across the last calendar year. SMMT also broke their findings down along regional lines. The body revealed that 14.9% of all British second-hand car sales for 2016 took place in the South-East of England, where Big Motoring World is based. This made the South East the UK’s best performing region for second-hand car sales last year, and it was followed by the North West and East of England, at 10.4% and 9.8% respectively. Commenting, SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said: “On the back of a record 2016 for UK new car registrations, it’s further good news that our used car market is in such good health. Strong demand is testament to the quality, reliability and appeal of cars on sale today, with used buyers enjoying more choice, more low emission, safety and connected technology than ever.”

Going for value

If the SMMT’s figures show us anything, it’s that Britons know good value when they see it. People are going for used cars, instead of newer versions, because they’re increasingly realising that these vehicles extremely reliable, safe, environmentally friendly and connected, but much more affordable. How many reasons do you need to join the UK’s growing population of second-hand car owners!
