Mercedes Benz Joins Formula E
Formula E, the first all-electric motorsport series continues to go from strength to strength. Using solely electric powered cars, this championship has caught the worlds attention. As a number of the worlds largest car makers choose to invest in the series, the latest major player to join is Mercedes.
In a roll call of names that would have the envy of any other motorsport series, in just a matter of years, Formula E has managed to tempt the likes of BMW, Audi, DS and Nissan to participate in this rapidly growing world championship. Whilst those names are already established in the sport the likes of Porsche are also set to join next season.
However one of the largest announcements comes around Mercedes Benz who have recently announced that they are about to join the all-electric adventure.
Formula E has established it’s self at a time where there have been a number of factors affecting the automotive industry. This extends to environmental pressures but more pressing has been the turbulent story of the emission gate scandal a couple of years ago.
With other manufacturers being drawn into this major mess, continuing to participate in more conventional motorsport series has been increasingly difficult to justify. Take Volkswagen for example, arguably the largest loser from the events that unfolded, they canned their World Rally Championship programme and virtually ceased all other motorsport involvement.
What Formula E allows is manufacturers to showcase their green credentials in a competitive space whilst utilising the knowledge gained to trickle down to their road cars. Formula E is essentially a high powered research hub of the future.
Mercedes is emerging as a major player in electric tech and as it continues to pump considerable resources into its electric abilities, Mercedes will be hoping that it can use Formula E to showcase its wares.
Formula E is unique in the sense that all of its races take place in the heart of city centres around the world. These are the exact areas that tighter emissions legislation are looking to protect. From a marketing point of view, the message is clear. Green technology need not come at the cost of driving thrill and performance.
Whilst Mercedes continues to dominate in Formula One it will be interesting to see if the automotive giant remains committed to F1 or whether they will consolidate their interests into an all-electric future. After all, could the days of the internal combustion engine soon be numbered?
